St Columb Major in mid Cornwall
is a town approx. 6 miles from Newquay, there are several small
rivers and streams that flow through it. There are a variety of
shops, pubs, restaurants, etc.
Events in St. Columb Major:
Shrove Tuesday Hurling Day
Annual event, this competition involves 2 teams, the townsmen and
the countrymen, each team competes against the other to carry a
silver ball to goals points set 2 miles apart. This is a very lively
and boisterous game with hundreds of onlookers.
St Columb Major Carnival
Annual week long event held in August, different entertainment throughout
the week ending with a carnival parade and firework finale.
Things to do:
Castle an Dinas
Iron Age Celtic fort dating from the second or third century BC.
Consists of three concentric circles of ditch and rampart, diameter
850 feet, 700 feet above sea level. Said to be one of the most important
examples of its kind in the South West. Cornwall Heritage Trust
site. Parking and picnic areas.
Nine Maidens
Row of nine stone megaliths in a field alongside the A39. Approx.
260 feet (80 m) in length, the stones vary in height from 2 to 6
feet and are spaced irregularly.
