Saltash

 
Saltash in the south east of Cornwall is a modern town known as “the gateway to Cornwall”, it is situated on the west bank of the River Tamar across from Plymouth. Saltash has a shopping centre with independent shops, pubs, restaurants, cafes and general retail shops.

There are river cruises from Saltash Pier.

Royal Albert Bridge
Completed and opened by Prince Albert in 1859, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the bridge spans the River Tamar between Devon and Cornwall and carry’s the Cornish main line railway system. Unique in design, with a total length of 2,187.5. The bridge can be viewed from the walkway on the Tamar Bridge.

Saltash Museum
Has a small permanent display about the history and well-known 'characters' of Saltash, each year a new temporary display is mounted during the summer months on different subjects (April to November).

Saltmill Park
17 acres of natural and man-made landscape for public enjoyment and recreation, open green spaces, views of the River Tamar, a skate park, public artworks and an all-weather sports pitch.

Elliott’s Store & Museum
A grocery store from the 1880's to the 1970's. In the next 30 years Frank Elliott consumed nearly all the remaining stock on the shelves, leaving perfectly preserved packaging, coins, bottles, wrappers, boxes and ration books. Now owned by the Tamar Protection Society.

Mary Newman's Cottage
In Culver Road, reputedly the home of Sir Francis Drake's first wife. The Elizabethan garden has been fully restored.

Churchtown Farm Community Nature Reserve - http://www.cornwallwildlifetrust.org.uk/
150 acres of farmland between the Tamar and the Lynher estuaries at Saltash. Managed for wildlife, includes wetland, hay meadows, arable land and hedgerows. There are two quarries designated as County Geology Sites.

A National Trust property at Torpoint, home of the Carew Pole family is an early 18th-century mansion, collections of paintings, furniture and textiles. The landscaped grounds go down towards the Lynher estuary. The film set for Disney's Alice in Wonderland, directed by Tim Burton.

A National Trust property near Saltash, a Tudor house with tapestries, textiles, arms, armour, pewter, brass and old oak furniture. Formally planted terraces, Valley Garden with medieval stewpond and dovecote. There are two orchards planted with local apples and cherries.

Trematon Castle – Not open to the public
Overlooking Plymouth Sound are the ruins of this 13th century castle keep. The oval keep has 10 feet thick walls standing some 30 feet high

Approached up a straight tunnel-like drive, the gardens planted since 1960, cover 5 acres and comprise of woodland, camellias, magnolias, bulbs and hellebores in early spring. There are formal mixed beds and borders near the house and an orchard. There is a shell house made in 1964. River views

Villages near Saltash:
St. Germans
Village on the Lynher River, in the 19th century it was a fishing village and the Quay was very busy, now it is home to the village sailing club.
St. German's Priory Church is a large Norman church consecrated in 1261.

Originally built as a priory, parts of the house date back to the 12th century, the rest is 18th and 19th century. Gardens and tea room. Open to the public.

Hessenford
Village with picturesque scenery approx. 5 five miles from St Germans, there is a cluster of 17th - 18th century cottages.

Tideford
Small village in east Cornwall on the River Tiddy approx. 2 miles from St. Germans. The bridge here dates from the 14th century.
