Perranporth

 

Perranporth on the north coast of Cornwall is a seaside resort situated between Newquay (approx.6 miles) away and Truro (approx. 7 miles) away. The resort has shops, restaurants, cafes, pubs, craft shops, caravan sites, hotels etc.

Beach
3 miles of soft sandy beach looking out to Perrans Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, with rockpools caves and tidal pool at Chapel Rock. Lifeguards during the summer season. To the back of Perran Beach are sand dunes known as Penhale Sands.

Millenium Sundial
Located on the Droskyn mine overlooking Perran Bay. The dial shows Cornish time which is 20 minutes behind GMT.

The Oratory
The patron saint of Cornwall is St. Piran, it is said he came from Ireland and landed on the shore at Perranporth, where he built an oratory to promote Christianity, now preserved in the sand dunes at Perran Sands.

Perranporth Airfield
Was used by the Royal Airforce between 1941-1946. It is now privately owned and used for gliding, parachuting and flying.

Events in Perranporth:
St. Pirans Day
Celebrated with a procession across the dunes to St Piran's cross with many of the marchers dressed in black, white and gold, and carrying the Cornish Flag. There is also a play of the Life of St Piran.

Held in October it celebrates Cornwall's celtic heritage, with traditional music, dancing, singing, story telling and links with others celts from Brittany, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Isle of Man

Bolingey September Fayre
A celebration of the local heritage with live traditional music and dance, crafts, stalls, food and games.

People associated with Perranporth:
Donald Healey
Born in Perranporth in 1898, famous for designing Healey cars and his association with the Austin Car Group which produced the Austin Healey's and the Austin Healey Sprite.
A stained glass window at St Michael's church Perranporth, was installed in his memory.

Winston Graham
Moved to Perranporth in 1925 where he lived until 1959. Famous for his series of Poldark novels which were televised in the 1970's. There is a memorial seat deicated to him at Flat Rocks on the sand dunes at Perranporth.
